During Reading instruction, students will learn to:
- Use good listening skills
- Recognize basic sight vocabulary
words - Recognize beginning, medial, and final
consonant sounds - Blend beginning, medial, and final
sounds - Recognize consonant
blends/clusters - Recognize diagraphs
- Use word endings (s, es, ed,
ing) - Recognize and use alphabetical
order - Recognize and use contractions, compound
words, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones - Categorize words and events
- Understand and use multiple-meaning
words - Use comprehension skills such as main idea
and supporting details, sequence of events, predicting outcomes,
etc. - Develop fluency in oral reading
- Follow written and oral
directions - Recognize different types of literature
(fiction, non-fiction, fairytales, etc.) - Read for enjoyment

Assessments:
- Students will take an assessment for reading, grammar, and spelling each week. New spelling words and vocabulary words are assigned weekly.
- In the beginning, reading tests will be read aloud to students until they have experienced the basic layout of the testing format and gain confidence. As the year continues, students will be expected to read the tests independently as they are designed to be on grade level.
